The v2 hardfork has activated! Make sure your software is up to date. Yes, this means YOU!

Status quo storage is not safe.

We’re here to show everyone why that is — and what they can do about it.

Sia is on a mission to protect people’s data.

And enable a new generation of privacy-preserving applications through secure, decentralized, open-source technologies.

Problems with Traditional Storage

It's centralized.
Someone else, like Google or AWS, has all your data in one place.
It forces blind trust.
You trust them to responsibly manage your data and keep it safe, sans code.
It’s expensive.
There’s not much market competition, so they can charge you a ton.
Your data can be sold.
Trad providers sell aggregate data and metadata to third parties.
Your data trains their AIs.
Traditional providers train their AI models using your data.
Your data is vulnerable.
If something fails, you lose access for hours or even the actual data.
Your data is a target.
It’s all in one place, making it an easy and attractive target for bad actors.
You are not in control.
Centralized providers have the power to take down your files.

Why We Exist

Your dignity should always be respected, and that includes within digital spaces.
You should be in full control of your data, by default — even if you can’t code.
You deserve to own your own cloud — and we’re the nerds who worked for 10 years to build it.

Timeline

2013

Sia was conceived at HackMIT by Luke Champine and David Vorick, with the goal of building a cloud storage network aligned with the original ethos of the Bitcoin network.

2015

Sia's mainnet launched, beginning its promise of safe and secure cloud storage. Since its launch, Sia has never had any downtime in all its history.

2018

The Sia network reaches one Petabyte of data stored at a single time. Many more have been utilized over the life of the network.

2020

The Sia Foundation was created to support the Sia network. It invests in and strengthens the protocol, community, and ecosystem.

2025

Sia makes major updates to all its software (V2), to its blockchain protocol (RHP4) and rolls out the ultra-lightweight UTXO (Utreexo).
